(Alfred G. Kvammen)

Hans Sandbeck was born 7 Jan 1829 in Hadeland, Norway. Hans secured a loan for $25.00 from a relative Kari Egge (later Mrs. Ole Ruen). He then emigrated to the United States, first setting foot on American soil 14 Jul 1854. When he arrived in America Hans changed his name from Sandbeck to Sandbank (the English pronunciation). Later, at the request and persuasion of his daughter, Mina Klinkenberg, the family resumed the original Norwegian name of “Sandbeck”. Hans' first summer in America was spent in Rushford, MN. He worked for an Irishman for $14.00 a month. He later cut rails on the Peder Ruen farm for $.75 a hundred. Hans also did some carpenter work. Several years later he helped build the Glenwood Lutheran Church.

Maria (Strandbakken) Sandbeck was born 1 Dec 1828 in Toten, Norway. After her father Gulbrand died, the family decided to emigrate to America. They immigrated in 1852. They lived in Kilbourn, Wl several years before coming to Glenwood Twp, Winneshiek Co. In Glenwood Twp. the family bought a farm near the Ruens and Eggebraatens. Maria worked as a hired girl for “Yankee" families in Frankville Twp. by the name of Cutler, Lane and Atkins. Although Norwegian was her native language, Maria learned to speak English fluently.

Hans and Maria were married in Jan 1859. They bought a farm on the Winneshiek-Allamakee Co. line. They paid $8.00 an acre for the farm. Their first home was a small house which Hans built. His farm implements consisted of a wagon and sled which he made. Instead of a John Deere tractor, Hans had a pair of oxen.

Hans and Maria had 5 children: Melvin H.: Sophia (Olson); Mina (Klinkenberg); Henrietta; and Peter Gilbert.

Hans died 3 Dec 1912; Maria died 9 Sep 1902. Both are buried at the Glenwood Church Cemetery, rural Decorah.
